ALAN CLARKE - SCULPTOR AND ILLUSTRATOR - Alan Clarke is one of Ireland’s leading figurative sculptors and illustrators. His work is sensitive, beautifully executed and richly imaginative, while rooted in the traditional skills of art-making. Coming from a family of artists, he has dedicated himself to virtuosity in his practice, and has won awards from all over the world, for both his sculpture and illustrations. Alan Clarke’s practice spans all aspects of figurative sculpture from formal portraits, to imaginative compositions, to large scale public artworks. His was the first ever Irish person to be accepted as a member of the prestigious Society of Portrait Sculptors, and his work has been recognised with awards and teaching engagements all over the world. He demonstrates an exceptional level of craftsmanship and a rare ability to capture emotion and drama in his subjects. He combines this with a unique imagination, making his work instantly recognisable and universally accessible.
Clarke is recognised as one of Ireland’s finest draughtsmen. His richly detailed and beautifully rendered illustrations have won him widespread acclaim. His distinctive work combines a mastery of the art of drawing with a vivid, unique imagination. Two large archives of his work have been acquired by the National Library of Ireland for inclusion in the National Collection. Projects have included book illustrations, posters, album covers, festival identities, advertising, editorial, as well as personal works for exhibition.
Alan Clarke teaches workshops and classes in Drawing, Sculpture and Human Anatomy.
